Dear Parents and Guardians,

To comply with state regulations and protect student data, New York State schools are making changes to Google Services for students, effective March 1, 2025. These updates align with Education Law 2D and guidance from Google and the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

What’s Changing?
Students will continue to have access to Google Core Services (e.g., Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Forms) for collaboration and learning. However, Google Additional Services, including YouTube, will be restricted to ensure compliance with privacy laws.

How Will This Impact Students?

  • Accessible Programs: Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Forms.

  • Restricted Programs: YouTube and other Additional Services.*

  • Teachers will still have access to YouTube and can embed videos into classroom tools for instructional use.

*It’s important to note that, while these restrictions apply to students, student data cannot be entered into or stored in services that are no longer available to students. This is part of our commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of student information in compliance with state law/

Why Are These Changes Taking Place?
These updates help safeguard student data, ensuring compliance with Education Law 2D and strengthening security in response to evolving privacy concerns.

If you have any questions, please reach out. Thank you for your understanding and support in maintaining a safe learning environment.

Sincerely,
Lisa Schrader
