Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Welcome to DEI at LCSD

At the Lockport City School District, our commitment is to foster a learning environment that is secure, inclusive, fair, and just for every student. By actively identifying areas where improvement is necessary and collaborating to enact essential changes, we strive to uphold the nation's promise of equal opportunity for all. While we may not have all the solutions at our fingertips, our school community is dedicated to tackling the demanding task of effecting positive, actionable changes within our schools and the broader educational system, addressing all forms of racism, bias, and discrimination.

We acknowledge that the dialogues we are encouraging within our student body, staff, administrators, and community members can be challenging. To some, change may appear to be unfolding too slowly, while for others, it may seem too rapid. Nevertheless, we firmly believe that following a thorough and deliberate process is key to achieving lasting results. The inequities and structural racism that have persisted in our schools for centuries will not vanish overnight, but they represent the most pressing issues in public education today. We extend our gratitude to the Lockport community for its unwavering support and partnership in our pursuit of this critical endeavor.

My Brother's Keeper

The Lockport City School District invites all young men of color in grades K through 12 to participate in "My Brother's Keeper" (MBK) program. Our vision is for young men of color to access their inner strength to achieve their purpose and potential with the support of vibrant school, family, and community partnerships. Our mission is to build a collaborative school community that embraces the voices of students, families, and staff to develop relationships that empower, foster resiliency, and instill hope in all students, especially boys and young men of color.

As an official chapter of My Brother's Keeper (MBK), the district offers the following support to our Lockport students:

  • Academic support

  • Mentorships

  • After-school programs

  • Social-emotional support services

  • Job readiness support and skill development

  • Specialized trips and activities

  • Parent advocates

To work with a MBK Parent Advocate, be sure to check out the LCSD Family Empowerment Center! You can learn more about our MBK Parent Advocates and the FEC Community Liaison on their staff web page

Cultural Heritage Days

Black History Month Celebration - February 2024
Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble from SUNY Brockport brought a vibrant celebration of several African cultures to LHS, captivating students from grades K-12 with an awe-inspiring performance. One of the highlights of the performance was the KuKu dance, a lively and interactive experience where Sankofa performers invited students and staff to join in the celebration. The KuKu dance symbolizes the joy of catching fish and sharing food, fostering a sense of community and unity. This event is just one part of LCSD's dynamic Black History Month programming, which includes various activities for every grade throughout February.

Native American Heritage Celebration - December 2023
LCSD welcomed the Native American Club from Akron Central School, a district filled with rich Native American heritage. The entire student body gathered for three different sessions, experiencing the unique performances.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration - September 2023
Students from across the district were treated to a concert by the incredible musical and cultural ensemble, Son Borikua. LCSD was thrilled to bring this exciting experience to our students to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
